Bob Brown
Old Frontier Sculpture

Bob Brown was raised in Park Rapids, Minnesota, near the Red Lake, Leech Lake and White Earth Indian Reservations. He has been teaching physical education in Florida since 1970 and started playing with clay in 1993. Most of his sculptures are of the human face, and a great percentage of those are of the American Indian and Mountain Men.

Although self-taught, Bob has begun to broaden and refine his work and to explore other faces from far away places. He relies on his personal library, reference materials, old paintings and photographs to render his sculptures as accurately as possible. One of his goals is to complete a bust of at least one member of each tribe.

A non-firing clay is used to make these one of a kind busts. The clay bust takes shape when clay is added to a wooden armature and wadded newspaper. Slowly the work progresses using more clay, traditional sculpting tools and tools made by the artist. The finished sculptured bust becomes permanent when left uncovered and allowed to dry. When the piece is totally dry (about 45 days) it is sealed with a clear spray matte or painted.
